Some homes could save several hundred pounds a year on gas used by the boiler. For homes with an efficient existing condensing boiler, the saving from boiler efficiency alone may be much smaller.

Why replacing an older boiler can reduce gas consumption
A boiler uses gas to provide heat for your home and hot water. Some of the energy escapes through the flue. Modern condensing boilers recover more of that heat than older non-condensing appliances, so less gas can be needed to deliver the same useful heat. The size of the improvement depends on the existing boiler and the replacement’s performance in your home. Installation quality, controls and operating conditions all matter. A boiler’s age alone cannot tell you its efficiency.
How much could you save on your gas bill
The following examples compare four assumed existing seasonal efficiencies with an assumed new seasonal efficiency of 92%. They show the effect of efficiency alone, keeping useful heating and hot-water demand and the gas unit price unchanged.
The spending figures cover gas consumed by the boiler only. They exclude standing charges, gas cooking and other appliances. The efficiency figures are illustrative assumptions, not measurements of your boiler or a promise of the replacement’s performance. Both efficiencies must be assessed on the same basis.

For example, suppose your boiler currently operates at an assumed 70% seasonal efficiency and uses £1,200 of gas each year. At 92% efficiency, delivering the same useful heat would cost approximately £913 at the same gas unit price. The difference is about £287 a year.
At £1,800 of annual boiler gas spending, the same efficiency improvement gives an estimated saving of £430 a year, equivalent to about £36 a month averaged across the year. Actual monthly savings would vary with heating use.
How the savings examples are calculated
Divide the old seasonal efficiency by the new seasonal efficiency. Multiply your existing annual boiler gas cost by that ratio to estimate the new cost, then subtract it from the existing cost.
For the 70% to 92% example, the new boiler uses approximately 76.1% as much gas for the same useful heat. That gives a reduction of about 23.9%. Simply subtracting the two efficiency percentages would not give the correct fuel saving.
Seasonal efficiency describes performance over time. A combustion analyser reading taken during a service is a snapshot and should not be used as though it were an annual seasonal-efficiency figure. A product label also does not guarantee that its stated performance will be achieved in every installation.
These examples do not predict future gas prices or include changes in comfort, weather, hot-water use or other energy costs. They are a starting point for a property-specific assessment.
Other benefits of replacing your boiler
Improved reliability when an old appliance is failing
Replacing a boiler with recurring faults may reduce the disruption of repeated breakdowns. This can be valuable when your existing appliance regularly leaves you without heating or hot water.
A new boiler still needs maintenance, and existing pipework, radiator or control faults should be investigated as part of the work. Replacement cannot guarantee that every problem elsewhere in the heating system will disappear.
More suitable heating controls
A replacement installation is an opportunity to review heating schedules, thermostats and compatible controls. Correctly chosen and used controls can help maintain comfortable temperatures and avoid unnecessary heating. Energy Saving Trust describes the benefits of heating controls.
Smart controls can offer convenient scheduling and remote access, but their savings depend on your current setup and how you use them. Do not automatically add a separate advertised controls saving to the efficiency savings above: the benefits may overlap.
A system that suits your household
If your hot-water requirements have changed, a replacement project allows you to review the complete arrangement. We consider the property, available water supply, bathrooms and existing cylinder before recommending a suitable boiler type and output.
A larger boiler is not automatically the best choice. The equipment needs to match the heating and hot-water demands of your home.
Manufacturer cover and planned maintenance
A new boiler may come with manufacturer warranty or guarantee cover, subject to its terms. Confirm the cover offered for the exact model and installation, including registration and servicing requirements.

Lower emissions from reduced gas use
Where the boiler burns less gas to provide the same heat, its direct carbon dioxide emissions from gas combustion also fall. This is an operating benefit; it does not account for the manufacturing and installation impacts of the new appliance.
Will replacing a boiler pay for itself
Compare the complete installation cost with the likely savings, while also considering reliability and repair needs. Fuel savings alone may take many years to recover the cost, particularly when replacing an already efficient boiler.
As a purely illustrative example, an installation costing £3,500 with annual gas savings of £287 has a simple payback of about 12.2 years. The £3,500 is an example cost, not a TNG Services Ltd quotation. This calculation excludes finance, price changes, maintenance differences and any avoided repairs.
For a sound existing condensing boiler, servicing, suitable controls or correcting a system fault may be more worthwhile than replacing it solely to save gas. If you are planning a major heating upgrade, it is also sensible to compare suitable alternative heating options for your property.

Will every new boiler save hundreds of pounds a year
No. The starting efficiency and amount of gas used make a large difference. The table shows how a relatively small improvement from 90% to 92% gives a much smaller saving than replacing a less efficient appliance.
Will my standing charge fall if I use less gas
Replacing a boiler does not itself reduce your daily gas standing charge. The examples apply only to gas consumption charges for the boiler.
Does a new boiler mean I should turn up the heating
You can choose comfortable settings for your household, but using more heat can reduce the bill saving. The examples assume the same useful heating and hot-water demand before and after replacement.
