YOUR STORED HOT WATER

Maintenance for the appliance you actually have

An unvented cylinder stores domestic hot water under pressure. It is a separate appliance from a boiler, even when a boiler heats the water through a coil. Safety components, controls and the expansion arrangement form part of the installation.

Servicing needs to follow the manufacturer instructions and be carried out by a suitably competent person. Share the model and service history so the proposed work can take account of the actual cylinder and any concerns you report.

What can a cylinder service involve?

The service scope follows the instructions for the particular appliance. It can include inspection of the cylinder and accessible connections, checks of relevant controls and safety components, and attention to the expansion arrangement. Cleaning or further component work depends on the model and findings.

Different cylinders manage expansion differently. A visit should account for the installed design rather than assume an external expansion vessel is present. Any defects or repairs needing further work should be explained separately.

Routine maintenance

Share the last service date if known. Annual maintenance is commonly specified by manufacturers; check the instructions and warranty terms for your own model.

An existing fault

Describe loss of hot water, leaks or discharge when enquiring. Routine servicing does not automatically include diagnosing and repairing every reported problem.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before arranging your cylinder visit

How often should an unvented cylinder be serviced?

Manufacturers commonly specify annual maintenance. Check the instructions and any warranty requirements for the individual cylinder and keep the service records.

Is this the same as a boiler service?

No. The cylinder stores domestic hot water and has its own maintenance requirements. A separate boiler service does not automatically cover the cylinder.

Can you quote from my enquiry?

The model, access and scope influence the work. Send photographs and fault details so the next step and proposed charges can be discussed.

Before you get in touch

Include your postcode, a photograph of the model label and a wider view of the installation. Describe how the water is heated, when the issue started and any previous repair work. Please do not remove covers or dismantle components for photographs.

Servicing, repairs and safe operation

Unvented hot water cylinders are pressurised appliances. Their safety controls and discharge arrangements should be maintained by a person competent to work on these systems. Do not bypass a control or block a discharge pipe to suppress a symptom.

If safety discharge continues, follow the manufacturer instructions and seek competent assistance. The correct response depends on the installation; it is not a reason to attempt valve adjustments or an internal repair yourself.
