A homeowner in St John’s Wood, London NW8 contacted TNG Services because the heating was not working properly and circulation was poor throughout the system. Our investigation found significant sludge in radiators more than 30 years old, together with ageing components that needed attention. We cleaned the system, replaced the thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), and upgraded the filter and circulation pump.
Why the heating system needed more than a simple reset
Sludge had accumulated inside the older radiators and was restricting the flow of heating water. The existing TRVs also required replacement. At the boiler, the 22mm magnetic filter was due for an upgrade to a 28mm MagnaClean, while the worn circulation pump was no longer an efficient choice for the system.
Addressing the circulation problem meant cleaning the radiator circuit and dealing with the components that control and protect the flow. Fitting a new pump alone would have left the accumulated contamination in place.
Cleaning and power flushing the radiators
We treated the system with Sentinel X800 and power flushed each radiator individually. Working through the radiators one by one allowed us to focus on the sludge and debris built up over years of service, rather than relying on a general system rinse.
Replacing the TRVs and upgrading the circulation components
With the system drained, we replaced the thermostatic radiator valves to restore better control of individual radiator temperatures. We also replaced the existing 22mm magnetic filter with a 28mm MagnaClean filter and installed a high-efficiency 180mm Grundfos modulating pump in place of the worn unit.
Treat and power flush each radiator to remove accumulated sludge and debris.
Fit new TRVs, the 28mm MagnaClean filter and the high-efficiency pump.
Refill the heating system and add Sentinel X100 inhibitor.
The completed installation
After the cleaning and component changes, we refilled and restored the heating system. Sentinel X100 inhibitor was added to help protect the boiler, radiators and other heating components against corrosion and future sludge formation. The finished installation brings the new filter and pump together in a more capable arrangement for the system.
