Following our previous visit to service and repair an Ideal Logic boiler, TNG Services Ltd returned to this customer’s home in Royston, Hertfordshire, SG8, to address the sludge contamination identified in the heating system.
We discussed two cleaning options with the customer: a power flush or a manual chemical flush. On this occasion, we carried out chemical cleaning using Sentinel X800, followed by manual flushing and treatment with Sentinel X100 inhibitor.
As you can see from the photographs, this heating system was calling for help!

Why sludge in a heating system needs attention
Sludge and corrosion debris can accumulate inside radiators, pipework and other heating components. These deposits can restrict circulation and reduce heat transfer, contributing to:
- Radiators that remain cold at the bottom.
- Uneven heating between rooms.
- Slow warm-up times.
- Noisy operation and poor circulation.
- Additional strain on the boiler and circulating pump.
Repairing the boiler is only part of the job when the wider heating system also needs attention.
Chemical cleaning with Sentinel X800
We used Sentinel X800 to help loosen sludge and deposits so they could be removed during flushing.
Adding cleaning chemicals alone is not enough. Once contamination has been loosened, the dirty water, cleaning solution and suspended debris need to be removed.
Following the chemical clean, we manually flushed the system with fresh water to remove the loosened contamination.

Protecting the system with Sentinel X100
After flushing, we treated the heating system with Sentinel X100 inhibitor to help protect against future corrosion and limescale formation.
X800 cleans the system, while X100 provides ongoing protection. Maintaining the correct inhibitor concentration helps protect the boiler, radiators, pipework and circulating components.
The inhibitor level should also be checked during maintenance, particularly after repairs, draining or repeated topping up.

Power flush or manual chemical flush?
Both options were discussed with the customer following our original findings.
A manual chemical flush combines chemical cleaning with draining and fresh-water flushing. A power flush uses specialist equipment to circulate cleaning water at a high flow rate and help remove contamination.
The most suitable method depends on the system’s condition, layout and severity of contamination. Heavily sludged systems may require more intensive cleaning, with some components needing separate attention.
Use Sentinel X800 to help loosen sludge and deposits.
Remove loosened contamination and cleaning solution with fresh-water flushing.
Treat the system with Sentinel X100 following flushing.
Why annual boiler and heating checks matter
This job highlights why regular maintenance should consider both the boiler and the wider heating system.
Annual servicing and heating checks help identify safety concerns, worn components, circulation problems and poor system-water condition. Addressing issues early can help:
- Support safe and efficient operation.
- Reduce the likelihood of avoidable boiler breakdowns.
- Maintain effective circulation and heat distribution.
- Prolong the working life of the boiler, pump, valves and other heating components.
Flushing is based on condition. An annual service does not mean the heating system needs flushing every year. Cleaning should be recommended according to its condition.
