Ideal Boiler Service & Gas Safety Check Royston SG8 | TNG

Ideal Logic+ H18 boiler with taped front casing before repairs in Royston SG8

When a boiler has been condemned and replacement recommended, a thorough second opinion can help establish exactly what is wrong and which repairs may be possible.

TNG Services Ltd was contacted by a customer in Royston, Hertfordshire, SG8, to inspect an approximately nine-year-old Ideal Logic+ H18 heat-only boiler.

The customer explained that a previous engineer had advised that a new boiler was needed and had mentioned a possible leak. According to the customer, no written report had been left, so they wanted a clearer explanation of the boiler’s condition.

Our investigation identified a damaged front casing and substantial contamination within the heating system. We arranged the work across three visits to address the safety defect, service the boiler and clean the system.

Boiler inspection and gas safety checks

Our visual inspection revealed damage to the top of the boiler’s front cover. The retaining clips were broken, part of the plastic casing was missing, and masking tape had been used to hold the cover in place.

A boiler casing can perform an essential safety function. Where damage prevents the casing from maintaining the required room seal, the appliance may be classified as At Risk (AR). Masking tape is not an appropriate repair for broken casing fixings.

We also carried out gas safety checks, including combustion performance testing and flue integrity checks. These results were satisfactory at the time of testing. However, satisfactory combustion readings do not remove the need to correct a damaged casing.

Safety action taken: A warning notice was issued, and the boiler was turned off with the customer’s permission pending repairs.

A blocked magnetic filter revealed a further problem

When we opened the magnetic filter, we found a substantial build-up of sludge and corrosion debris.

The customer reported that the boiler had been serviced approximately one week earlier, making the condition of the filter an unwelcome surprise.

The contamination raised concerns about heating-system cleanliness and water treatment. However, the filter’s appearance alone could not establish when it had last been cleaned or whether inhibitor had previously been added.

A heavily blocked filter and sludge within the system can restrict circulation and reduce heat transfer. We suspected that poor circulation may have contributed to overheating, although this was a possible explanation rather than a confirmed cause.

The findings showed why the heating system needed attention alongside the boiler itself.

Front cover replacement and full strip service

For the second visit, we returned to carry out the agreed boiler repairs and servicing.

The work included:

  • Replacing the damaged front cover.
  • Carrying out a full strip service.
  • Replacing the electrodes.
  • Replacing the relevant service seals.
  • Reassembling the boiler and checking the cover fitted correctly.
  • Retesting the boiler following the work.

This addressed the identified casing defect and allowed the appliance to be reassessed following servicing.

Age is one part of the assessment. A boiler’s age alone does not determine whether it needs replacing. Its condition, safety, repair costs and overall performance all need to be considered.

Sentinel X800 cleaning and manual flushing

Because of the level of contamination found, we recommended a central heating power flush.

After discussing the options, the customer chose chemical cleaning followed by manual flushing.

We used Sentinel X800 cleaner to help loosen sludge and corrosion deposits, then manually flushed the system to remove loosened contamination and cleaning chemical.

Following flushing, the system was refilled and treated with Sentinel X100 inhibitor to help protect against further corrosion and scale formation.

Chemical cleaning with manual flushing offers a different cleaning approach from a power flush. The appropriate method depends on the system’s condition, layout and the extent of the contamination.

01Inspect and document

Identify the casing defect, carry out safety checks and inspect the magnetic filter.

02Repair and service

Replace the front cover, electrodes and relevant seals, then reassemble and retest.

03Clean and protect

Clean with X800, manually flush and treat the refilled system with X100 inhibitor.

Why boiler servicing and system maintenance matter

This Royston job highlighted the importance of looking beyond a single fault.

The damaged front cover required attention for safety, while the blocked magnetic filter revealed a separate problem with the heating system’s condition.

A thorough assessment helps customers understand:

  • Which defects have been confirmed.
  • Which issues require further investigation.
  • What repairs are necessary.
  • Whether system cleaning is advisable.
  • Whether boiler replacement is justified.

Clear findings and written documentation help customers make informed decisions about their heating.
