First leak: a damaged shower diverter cartridge

The first, smaller leak was traced to a damaged and bent shower diverter valve cartridge. Water was escaping through the valve body and into the wall.

Because the leak was concealed, its source was not immediately obvious. Tracing where the water was coming from was essential to understanding the problem and the repairs needed.

But that was only the first finding. There was another leak to investigate.

Second leak: a hidden DIY surprise

Before making an access opening in the ceiling, we covered the work area and protected the floor.

Once the ceiling was opened, we found flexible tap connectors supplying the hot and cold water feeds to the concealed shower mixer.

A surprise above the ceiling: Those tap connectors had been given a promotion to shower pipework!

It was quite a DIY discovery, but it gave us access to the second leak and the connections that needed replacing.

Replacing the flexible connectors with rigid copper pipework

We removed the leaking flexible connectors and replaced them with rigid copper pipework and soldered joints for the hot and cold water supplies to the concealed shower mixer.

This addressed the leaking connections hidden above the ceiling and replaced the existing arrangement with properly fitted copper pipework.

The job also showed why a thorough leak investigation matters: finding one fault does not always mean you have found every source of water escaping.

Ceiling repaired after the area had dried

Stopping the leak was only part of putting things right for the customer.

Once the affected ceiling area had dried, we repaired the access opening and restored the ceiling. We left a neat finish, better than before and to the customer’s satisfaction.

From protecting the floor before opening the ceiling to repairing it afterwards, care for the customer’s home was part of the work throughout.
