TNG Services Ltd was contacted by a customer in Loudwater, Hertfordshire, WD3 to investigate and repair a Worcester Bosch Greenstar CDi heat-only boiler. The visit included fault finding, electrode replacement and a comprehensive boiler service, alongside maintenance of the heating system’s magnetic filter.
What we found inside the boiler
During our investigation, we identified heat damage to the internal insulation around the electrode area. Signs of leakage and corrosion were also found inside the boiler casing.
We examined the affected area to establish the extent of the damage and determine the repairs required.
Electrode replacement and a comprehensive boiler service
The electrode was replaced, and a comprehensive service was completed. We thoroughly cleaned the main heat exchanger and replaced the associated seals disturbed during the work.
The work included:

- Replacing the associated seals.
- Inspecting the internal insulation and surrounding sealing area.
- Checking boiler operation and combustion performance after the work.
Was a new front cover required?
Closer inspection showed that the insulation damage was confined to the central section, while the surrounding sealing area remained intact. Based on the findings at this visit, replacement of the complete front cover was not considered necessary.

Cleaning the main heat exchanger
The main heat exchanger was thoroughly cleaned as part of the service. The associated seals disturbed during the work were replaced before the final operational and combustion checks.
Magnetic filter cleaning and system protection
We also cleaned the magnetic filter to remove collected heating system debris.
The inhibitor level was checked and topped up to help protect the system against corrosion and sludge. Looking after the heating system alongside the boiler forms an important part of ongoing maintenance.

Clean the heat exchanger and magnetic filter, replace disturbed seals and top up inhibitor.
Check boiler operation and combustion performance following the work.
Testing following the repair
After completing the repair and service, we tested the boiler, including checks of its operation and combustion performance.
